Farewell, ‘iTunes Pass’

One of the handful of passes (along with Apple Store Gift Cards, online order pickups and other appointments) Apple offered for Apple Wallet – iTunes Pass – is now retired in regions where the Apple Gift Card has been introduced, including Australia as of last month.

First launched way back in July 2014, the iTunes Pass made it easy to add funds to your Apple account, living in Passbook (what we now call Wallet)

The pass had a unique QR code for your account that could be scanned at Apple Stores (and other limited participating retailers in some regions) to easily add funds to your Apple ID for use on the App Store & iTunes – removing the need to buy a gift card, then get the code and then redeem it.

It also made it super easy to check your balance, appearing in the top corner of your pass.

Now in regions that the App Store & iTunes cards have been merged to create the Apple Gift Card, the pass is no longer available and is marked as ‘Expired’ in Wallet.

RIP, iTunes Pass.
